HIGH POINT, N.C. – David Corbin has become the new CEO of American Silk Mills (ASM), filling the position previously held by Cynthia Clark Douthit, who has retired.

Douthit will consult with the company in design and product development.

Founded in 1896, ASM specializes in designing, weaving and distributing textiles to the residential, contract, transportation, and specialty markets. ASM products include indoor/outdoor performance fabrics, fine-jacquard textiles, high-quality silks, velvets, and Sensuede, an eco-friendly synthetic suede.

Corbin has extensive experience in the home furnishings industry. Prior to joining ASM, he held positions as president and CEO at Real Home Furniture by Oak West,  manufacturing youth and home entertainment furniture; chief operations officer at Steve Silver Company -- casual dining, upholstery and occasional furniture.

He also held leadership positions at Southerland, Inc., an independent bedding company; Chromcraft Revington, a furniture and upholstery company manufacturing product lines that include Chromcraft, Peters Revington and Cochrane; Home Meridian International, a furniture company developing and marketing branded product lines, including Antiques Roadshow, Build-A-Bear Workshop Home, Keepsakes, Pulaski and Samuel Lawrence.

“For nearly two decades, Cynthia has graciously contributed both her knowledge of the industry and her reputation for design creativity,” Updeep Singh, deputy CEO at Sutlej Textiles and Industries Ltd., American Silk Mills’ parent company, says in a statement.

Sutlej Textiles bought ASM in November 2017.

Sutlej is the flagship textiles company of the KK Birla Group headquartered in India, which produces a range of products including spun yarns, residential fabrics, contract drapery and upholstery. Sutlej is in more than 65 countries.

Officials say ASM plans on expanding its business through acquisitions.

Corbin says: “The synergies between ASM and Sutlej offer infinite opportunity for alignment across the company that will expand the resources of the company and benefit our North American customers.”
