Albert Hartley Buys Stead McAlpin

August 4, 2009

LANCASHIRE, United Kingdom - Stead McAlpin, the famous and well-known flatbed and rotary screen printer was purchased out of bankruptcy by textile manufacturer R. Soper Ltd., trading as Albert Hartley, on July 31.

The deal hinged on making a new agreement with employees who had struck the Stead Carlisle plant previously. Stead McAlpin was placed into bankruptcy on April 2 after Apex Textiles, the former owner, went out of business after purchasing Stead from The John Lewis Partnership in September, 2007.

"Stead McAlpin will continue to trade as Stead McAlpin and Company Ltd. retaining its heritage as a top-end printer for the interior market sector with the same capabilities as before," according to Sue Magee, a representative of Steads.

Albert Hartley itself prints up to a 250,000 meters of fabrics a week with a wide range of home furnishing applications using both rotary and flat bed printers. R. Soper bought Hartley in 2001.
