Scala, Sourcing Pioneer, Offers Designs at Value Prices

April 3, 2001

New York – Scala owner Chip Scala is angling to become the retailer's total off shore resource, he said. By designing and manufacturing in various countries, Scala International has developed a complete line of home textiles, including sheers and elegant burnouts for the curtain trade. Scala also produces shower curtains and bedding. Scala said that the company also designs exclusive private label products for his customers as well as sourcing a well-balanced elegant open line.

Scala has had a high profile professional history in the industry, including 20 years at Croscill Home Fashions. He founded his company in 1994 and was an early leader in the off-shore sourcing arena. He has expanded his global sourcing beyond India to South America, India, Egypt and Pakistan. His showroom is dedicated to global sourcing in all price points. He represents the Pakistani mill, Notex, that produces fine Egyptian cotton jersey for blankets, as well as cotton terry for towels and bathrobes.

Scala also represents Rawsitasa, an Indian mill that produces fine, elegant silks. His line, called "solo per te," (only for you) is available in silk from India as fabric only or as a finished product.

"Most Americans go overseas to buy cheap," he said. "Europeans go overseas to India and China and make finer products at value prices. I realized that Europeans were making fabulous things. I adopted the attitude of making good design at value price points – not cheap. It seems that Americans have never learned how to make fine things overseas. They take a mass market mentality and do it as cheaply as possible."

Scala has just put the finishing touches on his new showroom at 230 Fifth Avenue. In the atmosphere of simplicity that characterizes the showroom space, the product is the focal point. He will display all kinds of home products: His latest product additions include lines of fine Italian bedding and table linens, gift accessories, ceramics and furniture accessories. Scala said he's trying to carve a niche for the company by offering well designed, products to the retailer, at value prices.
