TOLENTINO, IT–Poltrona Frau, a division of Haworth Inc. has created 'Re-Saddle,' a combination of leather fibers and recycled polyester certified by the Global Recycle Standard (GRS).
Haworth is based in Holland, Michigan (USA), owns many furniture brands and buys a wide variety of upholstery fabrics.
In 2014, the Haworth family purchased the Poltrona Frau Group, which in 2025 became Haworth Lifestyle.
“With Re-Saddle, we reinforce our commitment to conscious design by turning what was once waste into a valuable resource,” says Nicola Coropulis, CEO of Poltrona Frau. The product is made from the company’s own production leather offcuts.
By omitting the tanning and retanning phases, this process is said to cut water use by 90% compared to conventional virgin leather production. The company says it achieves a 95% water recycling rate, and boasts a carbon footprint of just 9.84 kg/m² CO₂eq, according to LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) methodology.
Re-Saddle is created by turning leather scraps into fine, textile-like fibers using a technique similar to carding. These fibers are then bonded to a polyester substrate which is then dyed and finished following the same process as natural leather according to the manufacturer.
