Five-Year-Old Albatros to Expand Facilities

After a 50% Increase in Sales in 2000, Hendriks Takes 'Optimistic View' of Future

Eersel, Holland — Albatros has added new production facilities as well as a new up-to-date logistic center here as a result of "a 50% sales increase in 2000 and an optimistic view of business in 2001," according to Bas Hendricks, president.

"In 2000 we introduced real leather yarn in our cotton-based Velazquez collection, and for 2001 we have new specials with the use of multi-tone wool and silk yarns as well as the fantastic Dali collection - a 'next generation' Velazquez," he said.

"We will also continue to produce custom-made collections for our editing customers. With the help of our new Pantone® color system and the wide variety of yarns we have available, there is virtually no limitation in creation," he said.

The Albatros factory is not in Eersel, but Hendricks would not reveal where it was. Albatros will celebrate its fifth anniversary in 2001.

Albatros attended Inter- textile in Shanghai as a first time exhibitor. Later, he traveled to Japan and finished his tour with visits to some European countries.

"We export to 34 countries in Europe, North and South America, Middle East, Africa and Far East," Hendriks said. "In general we focus on better and high-end upholstery and decorative fabrics and sell to wholesalers, furniture manufacturers, well-known editors and converters, larger retailers and other product-related buyers such as handbag and cushion manufacturers.

"To do so we exhibited our products at the fairs in Frankfurt, Como, Brussels, Dubai and Shanghai. Thanks to these activities and in combination with our extensive network of highly rated customers and representatives, our total sales volume increased by 50% for the year 2000.

While the Albatross collection of leather and cotton fabrics like Velazquez is interesting in itself, the city where Albatross is based is also unique story. Eersel was founded in 712 (the 8th century) and some of the first buildings can still be seen on the market at Markt 24 Street. Today, Eersel has a population of about 5,000. Trade started in 1600 because Eersel was on a crossroad between Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany.

In 1900, Eersel became home to what was then the beginning of the fledgling Dutch cigar industry.

Today, the brands of 'Henri Wintermans' and 'Agio' export over a billion cigars a year which is "a nice figure to look at in terms of meters of fabric," Hendricks said.
