March 27, 2001

Mysore, India – With $5 million in sales produced on eight looms, Chamundi Silk is a 50-year-old company, which emphasizes its own designs produced in silk blends.

''Pure silk is a flat fabric for the most part,'' said M. Rajendran, design manager of Chamundi. He has four years of training on CAD systems, which he received in design school in Chennai.

''For the past three years, we have been producing silk blends which focus on texture. The silk is blended with linen, chenille and cotton in lampas designs.''

The fabrics are high end with 300 grams of yarn per meter. Chamundi sells Cowton & Tout and F. Schumacher in the U.S.A.

''We're moving into wider widths with a 300 cm. dobby line for bedding, sheer curtains in raw, undyed silk,'' said Rajendran.
