Quaker and 3M to Push Scotchgard™ Brand

September 26, 2006

FALL RIVER, Massachusetts – Quaker Fabrics and 3M Company are collaborating to relaunch 3M's Scotchgard brand back into the furniture market.

"As the newcomer, we wanted to know how we get back in," said Mitch Culbreath, business development manager with 3M's protective materials and consumer health care division. He said working with Quaker is a good way to re-establish the Scotchgard brand in the marketplace, letting customers know where to get it and retailers know how to benefit from it.

Scotchgard is a fabric protector that is added on during the finishing processes of a mill, delivering oil and water repellency among other attributes.

3M took most of their products off the market in 2000 but chose to stay in the carpet, apparel and leather markets. According to Culbreath, since then the company has been looking at a number of different areas to get involved in and decided furniture would be a main target.

"3M's reformulated Scotchgard Protector provides all of the performance benefits consumers expect from the brand – stain resistance, stain repellency and stain release – with products that are not based on PFOA or PFOS chemistry. This makes Scotchgard Protector the natural choice for consumers desiring to use products with minimal to no environmental impact. That Quaker Fabric shares our value for the brand and for the environment makes them the perfect partner as we relaunch the Scotchgard brand into the furniture marketplace," Culbreath said.

"Quaker is the only mill in the US and Canada that can use our brand on their fabrics. They have rights to the brand."
