KnollTextiles Introduces Four Additions to Archival Collection

August 18, 2009

NEW YORK, New York - KnollTextiles announced four new upholstery and drapery fabrics to be added to its Archival Collection. This collection was originally created as part of the 60th anniversary of KnollTextiles two years ago.

Creative Director Dorothy Cosonas is actively trying to maintain a dialogue with the past while upholding modern standards and tastes. "I've tried to maintain the essence of the original design," Cosonas said. "We also look at color and I work to strike a balance between paying homage to the original direction and still keeping it current for today's market."

KnollTextiles was founded in 1947 by Florence Knoll Bassett who was pushed to create avant-garde fabrics that would appropriately accommodate Knoll Associates' commercial design practice. "It became apparent to me that suitable textiles were not available," said Bassett. "The colors were as drab as the designs." When KnollTextiles emerged it was the first unification of furniture and fabric production in the commercial furniture industry.

Knoll's lengthy history in the textile industry will be the subject of a major retrospective in 2011 at the Department of Textiles and Fashion Arts in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
