Shashi Caan Designs New Mohawk Group Showroom

November 22, 2005

NEW YORK, New York — Shashi Caan rolled out her new design for The Mohawk Group's Manhattan showroom on November 16.

The 16,000 square foot showroom is the first to bring the family of six contract carpet brands—Karastan Contract, Durkan Commercial, Durkan Patterned Carpet, Lees, Mohawk Commercial and Bigelow Commercial—together in one space.

"This is their space for consolidating company-wide," said Caan, of the New York-based Shashi Caan Collective.

The brands are sectioned off to maintain their unique identities.

"The big idea here is to walk into the drum of a carpet roll, which is on its end, because they're all about flooring. As the drum unfurls and meanders, it connects the brand spaces," said Caan. Telephone booth-like spaces were created for the sales force to discuss the carpets in an acoustically-private, fully-wired atmosphere.

"It needed to be a showroom and not an office," said Caan, who designed the space in nine months with the help of her colleagues Rich Baker and Theo Prudon.

"The opening of this New York showroom is a milestone for us as a company. But more importantly, for specifiers, we've just helped to make their jobs that much easier. We've now become an even more valuable resource, offering a single showcase and stopping point for them to see firsthand our diverse range of solutions to their floor covering needs," said James McCallum, president of The Mohawk Group.

In addition to the showroom, Caan will formally debut her Mohawk carpet line on December 1. The line features an inherently constructed pattern. According to Caan, "I wanted to design product that wasn't just ahead of its time, but would sell."
