At least one American company claims to be buying Trevira®CS yarns and sending them to China to be woven into finished fabric. Once woven, these finished contract/hospitality fabrics are shipped back to American customers. This way the yarn exporter can control Chinese made fabric. (He's clever, no? See separate story about Chinese hospitality textiles on page 1.) Trevira denies the claim, but it said if it found a company doing this, it would be subject to litigation.

The American company wouldn't disclose where it is buying the TreviraCS yarn that it is weaving in China. Spinnkock (U.S.A.) and Cavalier (Canada) both make spun yarns. Trevira also makes yarn in Brazil and Germany. Spinnkock said it is unaware of any company exporting spun Trevira yarn to China.

''It's possible the yarn exporter is buying the Trevira(r)CS yarn in Europe and sending it to China,'' a source said. ''Trevira is trying to maintain control over high standards, present a good image and protect its loyal customer base. Trevira charges a premium for its product and certainly doesn't want to see erosion in the price.'' Trevira has repeatedly turned down requests to sell yarn to Pakistani, Indian or Chinese mills.

No fabric can qualify for CS designation until it has been tested by and approved by Trevira in Germany. It must meet European flame standards. So, beware of claims that Chinese fabrics are certified TreviraCS fabrics. ''We haven't spent 30 years promoting this fabric to just pass the time of day,'' a Trevira spokesman said. F&FI
