NEWH Partners with UNICEF to Promote Education Internationally

November 18, 2005

MIAMI, Florida — Nearly half-way into their year-long campaign with UNICEF, NEWH has raised approximately $40,000 of its $50,000 pledge to promote the School-in-a-Box program.

The program delivers essential learning and teaching materials to places where educational services have been disrupted due to sudden severe situations, including war, civil strife or natural disaster. The kit is designed to enable teachers to set up makeshift classrooms almost anywhere, ensuring the continuation of children's education within the first 72 hours after the onset of an emergency.

"One $400 box will provide emergency education for 80 children," said Nichole Brown, UNICEF deputy director. "It is simple, cheap and it makes a difference."

A $400 contribution translates to a complete School-in-a Box kit and its delivery to even the most remote areas in need. However, NEWH is welcoming individual contributions in any amount.

The largest pledge to date came from Harvey Nudelman, president of Fabricut/S. Harris, has pledged to match all donations made by Fabricut Contract and S. Harris personnel up to a total of $5,000. Northeast Textiles has also pledged $5,000 and will match pledges.

To date, the UK Chapter of NEWH has been responsible for tens of thousands dollars in donations, and ensuring completion of the goal.

''With the incredible progress made by our UK chapter, under the leadership of Minda Dowling, over half of the $50K commitment has been reached. I get almost daily reports from this chapter saying 'we sold another box or another two boxes or another three boxes.' Their enthusiasm for reaching the hearts of the less fortunate is incredible," said Lynda Welte, chair, international community development programs.

Welte continued: "with the competitive and generous nature of the other chapters, I would not be surprised if NEWH doubles the commitment for School from the Heart''. School from the Heart has really helped to bring our industry closer together. So, please give, spread the word and stay tuned for more results.''

NEWH will continue to promote the program through industry events. The annual NEWH Gala, which will be held at Los Angeles' UltraLounge will host this year's fundraiser, to benefit the program.

One School-in-a-Box includes a series of basic school supplies, such as exercise books, pencils, erasers and scissors; a wooden teaching clock and plastic cubes for counting; and a set of laminated posters with alphabet, multiplication and number tables for group instruction. The kit comes in a locked aluminum box, the lid of which can double as a blackboard when coated with a special paint that is also included in the kit.
