Décor de Paris Plans to Open New Showrooms in 2003

August 28, 2003

LAS VEGAS РD̩cor de Paris Corp, the designer showroom, which specializes in four- and five-star projects, is remodeling one of its showrooms and will open additional locations this year. "We're planning to have two to three showrooms in 2003 in Chicago and Atlanta," said Allan Elson, vice president of sales for the Los Angeles-based company.

Currently Elson is (very carefully) remodeling the company's showroom in Los Angeles, a project that has taken more than six months. "Architectural Digest just photographed our new showroom on the inside but they are waiting to take the outside shots when it is finished. A job like this should take three months but I am a perfectionist. If I pick a certain limestone for the interior, it has to be right or I won't accept it.''

Elson, a trained interior designer (ASID), is an important figure on the scene. He has been working on local hospitality projects in Las Vegas for 30 years never takes a vacation. ''I want to be here for my customers and make sure everything is done properly."

Elson is confident his clients feel "it's a done deal" if his name is associated with their project. "If I don't like the product, I don't ship it to the customer. I'll send it back before I would release it. I'm too loyal and too honest. When I lost my house in Studio City to the big earthquake, I still made it to work on time that day in 1994 even though I was up until 4 a.m. I lost everything in that quake. Maybe that's a fault, but my clients are my friends. They have been good to me."

Elson, who is well versed in textiles, actually does his own designs so the fabrics are unique and won't be found elsewhere. The company stocks 200 yards of each item it carries. "We buy from all over the world including from domestic sources. We easily carry product from 20 to 30 mills on an exclusive basis. Everything we sell is in stock including dupioni silks which we might sell for $22 when everyone else has it for $40 in the same weight.''

The volume of hotel rooms in Las Vegas makes refurbishment a significant percentage of the opportunities there. Elson said regular guest rooms are refurbished every four years while suites might be redone every seven to eight years.

"The high roller suites at the Bellagio for example are 7,000 square feet. These are now being redone. People don't come here for a weekend. They stay for a week to two weeks. If an Asian has bad luck, he switches rooms. At the Palazzos in the Rio Hotel, they change the size of the rooms as needed. If these rooms are full, they place people in the tower suites."

Décor de Paris Corp counts among its clients Tony Marnell of Marnell Carrao Associates, a major designer, architect and builder of hotel projects; Laura Frankenberg, principal of Buy Design, a Las Vegas purchasing agent, and Judy Rosen of Republic Furniture Manufacturing, Inc., a furniture producer in Los Angeles.
