BBGM Opens Office in Sydney, Australia

January 13, 2003

New York - Brennan Beers Gorman & Monk, a multi-service firm, opened an office in Sydney, Australia in September. From that location BBGM will try to stake a greater share of the hospitality design market in Australia, China and Asia-Pacific. BBGM, which provides architecture, interior design and graphic design services, has offices in Washington D.C., Beijing and in New York, its headquarters.

In 1992, the company opened an office in Hong Kong. According to interior design division president Julia Monk, it supported several large-scale projects in the region until the bottom fell out with Asian economic crisis. The office closed in 1999.

Today, Monk believes BBGM's greatest potential for growth lies in Beijing. ''It's a tremendous market over there,'' she said. ''The blitzkrieg of construction to prepare for the (Summer 2008) Olympics and the country's admission to the WTO will also surge them forward. The market there is changing quickly, they're adopting things Western.''

Monk estimated that the firm's business is split evenly between domestic and international projects. Near the end of 2002, she said the work of the interior design division was half renovation and half new construction. Monk expects that balance to tip in 2003. ''Based upon what we are seeing so close to the end of the year, I believe that 2003 will present more new-build interior design opportunities than 2002. I base this on the markets that we are serving, which include China and Asia Pacific.'' F&FI
